I specialize in Type 2 federal shelter halves based on Fred Gaede's work, The Federal Civil War Shelter Tent.
The basic tent I produce is a type 2a shelter half made of three cotton drill pannels machine stitched together vertically,
with hand stitched hems, button holes, and grommet holes. Each half has 23 bone buttons, 2 bottom corner hemp or manila rope
loops, and a 6' guy rope. The halves measure roughly 66" long by 63" wide. The price per standard half is currently $85.
I can also produce a type 2b shelter half, which is the same size and shape, but is pieced horizontally. These halves have
only been documented to troops in the Western theatre, and likely originated only at the Cincinnati depot. These halves
use slightly more fabric than the type 2a, and are currently priced at $95/half.
I can also do variations. I will make a machined hem version, or for $125 I will make an entirely hand sewn half
based on originals. I can also do "field modifications" such as extra rope loops, extra grommet holes, repairs, &c.
Type 2 tents are generally appropriate for impressions from Spring 1862 through the end of the war. Type 3 tents begin to
appear in the Fall of 1863 and become increasingly prevalent through the end of the war. Type 3 tents are made of 2 vertical
pannels of cotton sailcloth (with a blue line in the weave marking the selvage), entirely machine stitched except for the
button holes. Type 3a halves have two corner rope loops and 23 stamped tin (or bone) buttons. Type 3b halves, which begin
production in Summer of 1864, have a third rope loop at the bottom center.
I can produce type 3 tents, and will quote a price on request, as the fabric varies in price and availability.
All of my tents are assembled with linen thread, or a combination of cotton and linen. They will display signs of mass
produced work such as imperfect stitching, minor size variations, and minor construction differences. Per originals, the
the cotton fabric is not pre-washed and will shrink. All of the buttons and holes on my shelter halves are measured
so that every half I produce will button together with any other half. I do not guarantee they will match another maker's
tents. Also, as shrinkage occurs, minor variations in the fabric may cause a mismatch. I have never seen this occur,
but it is a possibility. I also recommend using the tents in the way they were intended. These are not better made than
originals, and if you mistreat them, they will not last as long.
As my tents are generally not based on any single original, it would be inappropriate to include maker's marks or
inspector's stamps. Therefore all of my tents come unmarked. If you would like a specific tent reproduced, contact
me and I'll see what I can do.
I will also entertain custom orders for other tents, flys, ground cloths, &c.
I have made "A" tents, wall tents, and flys in the past.
The prices above do not cover shipping. Shipping will be based on the current USPS parcel rate and I will let you know when
you order. If possible, I prefer to hand deliver these at Civil War events.
Cash is always preferred. Money orders are fine. Personal checks will be accepted under certain conditions.
